Vintage Small American Diner Table c. 1940’s U.S. Art Deco Classic 2 of 2
Length 90.8cm Width 55.2cm Height 76cm Edge of top 3.2cm thick
In all my years of mucking around with vintage furniture I’ve never come across an American mid century diner table, let alone two of them.
This one is a long rectangle shape. Petite, tiny even, perfect for a very small space.. but incredibly solid and chunky. A solid cast iron pedestal base on a triangular base support a thick solid wood top covered in red Formica edged in grooved aluminium. The result is an extremely solid platform with a design look that is instantly recognisable from a thousand classic American films and images. One can only imagine the number of sunny side ups, pieces of pie and cups of coffee that have been served on this table. One things for sure.. it never tipped over!
Another detail of social history.. if you look underneath the top you can see fossilised chewing gum! I could have removed these when doing the cleaning but thought it would be a shame.. they are rock hard and may have been put there by Chuck or Mary Lou 50 years ago!
Completely original and in remarkable condition for its age. I think the patina of wear only adds to its character. Please inspect the photos to see if you agree. I’ve included closeups of the most worn bits..you might need to click the arrow a few times to view through all 14 photos. Inspection is welcome.
Ideal as a tiny dining table or workbench.
I have also listed a second one with a different design and a dark grey top.. still small but larger than this one. Check it out if you’re interested.
Inspection in Heidelberg in Melbourne is welcome.
Pickup only also from Heidelberg.. if required I can deliver to the metro area for a modest fee
